Behind the Song: “Big Red Moon”

This song is my transcendence.

I am convinced that this will be the best love song I’ll ever write. It is, to date, my favorite song that I have ever written.

“Big Red Moon” is one of many firsts for me, and I hold it extremely close to my heart. It was the first song I wrote on the guitar. It was the first song I recorded with Van. It was vocally done in one take, and I am simply obsessed with it.

I fell in love with a moment. And that’s what this song is about.

It’s about being in a moment so perfect that you wish you could bottle it up and hold onto it forever. The only thing I have to commemorate my moment is a Twisted Tea bottle cap and this song.

Every time I play this song, I’m taken back to that moment…

I can see that moon, I can feel the sand, I can taste the salty breeze that came from the sea that night. I cannot escape the transportation I get from this song.

To me, this is what real love feels like, and I am honored to say that I have felt it and lived it.

When I arrived at Van's studio for our first session, we sat down, the two of us, and turned the microphones on to just play with sound.

We ran through this song, and the take was so raw that we kept it. There was a soft buzzing from the microphone (we wound up switching microphones for the rest of the record) that made the song feel so warm. We fed off of that happy accident and tried to keep that warmth with the instrumentation. Van added strings and birds chirping, and thunder, and the first time I heard the song with those components, I sobbed. I don’t think a song could capture a moment more perfectly.

This song is my greatest, most epic love. And I feel eternally grateful that I get to share just a second of that moment with you all.

Thank you for listening.

Love,
